Sandell®'s Copper - "A Trademark of Tradition"
The construction industry understands change and has redefined itself
while experiencing success and failure. Nevertheless the venture continues
onward into the millennium. The demand for production to be timely and
cost effective has established Sandell® as the permanent solution for
moisture protection. A mere idea that was suggested by Harry Sandell in
the 1930's, has been taken to new levels and redefined - COPPER THRU-WALL
FLASHING.
The introduction of Copper Thru-Wall Flashing created much skepticism throughout
the construction industry. However, the many years that passed proved to be the
building blocks that Sandell® needed to obtain trust in the trade. Since that
time, changes in technology have been built upon as a foundation for new innovations.
Preserving past experience has enabled Sandell® to advance forward and further
develop a simple idea.
At the present time, Sandell® continues to devote time and attention
to research and development of various products. History reflects the insight,
integrity, perseverance, and pride with which Harry Sandell founded this
company. Today, Sandell® is maintained with the same traditional values.
This certifies a winning combination with our customers and secures the
future of construction.
Why Copper?
CU - COPPER
A reddish brown malleable, ductile, metallic element that is corrosion
resistant and an excellent conductor of heat and electricity.
Copper can be found pure in nature as an element. History dictates that
copper was an abundant resource in ancient times. Today, copper is still
a very strong, yet practical commodity, with endless uses. Originally popular
for its high malleability and tensile strength, copper has proven to withstand
the test of time with unfailing performance.
With this in mind, the French master sculptor, Frederic Auguste Bartholdi
envisioned a work of art that would later become a renowned wonder to the
world. Choosing copper as the foundation for his creation, the sculptor
knew that in order for his design to be eternal, it needed to be constructed
from a permanent source.
What better source than copper!
Today we know this wonder of the world to be the Statue of Liberty. We commend
the sculptor for his foresight in creating such a masterpiece, with immortality.
Through one hundred years of biting sea winds, torrential rains, and the beating
sun, the construction of the Statue of Liberty has not only grown more beautiful,
but has remained effectively intact. A glance at the statues rich green patina
provides evidence of copper's remarkable endurance properties.
Studies show that the weathering and oxidation of the copper has consisted
of .005 of an inch, within a century. It is for this reason that copper
was one of the few elements that did not need to be significantly replaced
when the statue was renovated for her centennial. We admire the statues
eternal beauty and duly note copper's preserving attributes.
Having examined the capabilities of this metal over 70 years ago, Sandell®
concluded that copper was the best choice for manufacturing thru-wall flashing.
The unfailing characteristics of the copper guarantees moisture protection
for the life of the structure, cost effectively.
Sandell® has been successfully producing copper thru-wall flashing
for over 70 years and there has never been an instance of flashing delamination
or decomposition due to the element. Product knowledge presents that flashing
is essential for a drainage wall system. However, the drainage system can
only be as reliable as the flashing that is installed to redirect moisture.
Selecting a flashing that will withstand the harshest conditions initially,
will undoubtedly save on added expenses in the future.
Although there are various types of flashings that are available for
masonry construction, copper has far more significant features that make
it superior to alternative flexible and less expensive flashings.
Copper's resistance to water and caustic compounds secures the structures
integrity. While the flexibility of the metal, contributes to the ease
of use and effortless application upon installation. The elements tensile
strength assures extended endurance and ultimate protection for years to
come.
As previously stated, copper was a premium idea several years ago. With
remarkable advances in technology, copper is still the exceptional choice
for thru-wall flashing today.
