How Fingersafe Works:

1. Fingersafe MK1A guards the large gap of the opening hinge side. The unique, patented accordion shape gently but firmly ejects your hand and anything else in the way.
2. The hinge pin side can pinch and AMPUTATE a finger in an instant! Fingersafe MK1B guards the area on the hinge pin side and also protects you from the protruding hinges.

Benefits

Safety and durability are primary benefits to Fingersafe. It is aesthetically pleasing: the MK1A lies flat against the frame unobtrusively when the door is closed, and the MK1B is an approximately 1.5" diameter curved gasket that wraps around the hinge pin area, barely noticeable. Fingersafe is approved for use in any four-hour fire-rated door assembly. Building owners may contact their insurance agent, broker or company and request a premium reduction as a result of having removed a source of workers' compensation, medical, third party, and employers' liability claims.

Fingersafe has secondary benefits: it excludes drafts, keeps dust out of the hinge area, saves the chore of painting in the hinge area (although the accordion shape may be removed and replaced for painting, if necessary), and retards smoke and fume spread in the event of a fire. Anywhere that a person is at risk from hinged doors closing on their hands or other parts of the body. This includes every exterior and interior door. However, particular risk is associated with child care, educational, elderly care, and industrial/production facilities; restaurants; offices; ships; and hotels/motels. According to the U.S. Federal Government: "It is essential that children's fingers be protected from being crushed or otherwise injured in the hinge space of a swinging door or gate..."

AI - Assembly, Instruction

Fingersafe is installed to existing door assemblies. The door is not removed for retrofitting, nor are additional provisions necessary for new construction. In the instance of new construction, simply hang and finish the door assembly as required, and add Fingersafe to the finished system. It is easily installed in minutes. It can be applied to wood or metal doors. There are two components of the MK1A: a pleated guard (the concertina shape in the images) and the retaining plate (a fixing strip).

There is a downloadable installation video available on the Fingersafe web site at http://www.fingersafe.com that shows the complete installation procedure, start to finish.

Full installation instructions, complete with photographs, are included with every order, but a brief synopsis of the MK1A follows: First, the door is closed. The one-piece fixing strip is applied to the door and the frame using self-tapping screws provided by Fingersafe USA, Inc. Then, the fixing strip is cut vertically to separate the strip (this ensures a perfect fit every time). Lastly, the concertina shape is snapped into each side of the fixing strip, fully covering the hinge area.

The MK1B is a single-piece unit that is attached to the door and the frame using self-tapping screws provided by Fingersafe USA, Inc.

MF - Materials, Finishes

Fingersafe MK1A and MK1B are made of high-quality PVC (UL V-0 rated) with TPE hinges. They have high impact resistance and are easily cleaned with typical household cleaners. Fingersafe is stocked in white, black, and brown. Please inquire about other colors.

Complies with NFPA 252, UL 10B, UL 10C, ASTM E152, CAN4 S-104, UBC 7-2 (1997). Fingersafe is approved for use in any four-hour fire-rated door assembly. Fingersafe is UL classified.

OM - Operation, Maintenance

Fingersafe is easily removed to paint or service the door or door frame. Only one component need be removed for service. This can even be done without the aid of tools. The concertina shape (pleated guard) is snapped out of its retaining plate, and the hinge area is ready for servicing. It is snapped back into place afterwards.
