5-GALLON KIT

The 5-gallon kit consists of: 1 can liquid epoxy resin (ABOCRETE-A), 1 can liquid hardener (ABOCRETE-B) and enough SAND to blend about 4.5 gallons of ABOCRETE mix, all packaged separately inside the same pail.

The most advanced and cost effective STRUCTURAL ADHESIVE SYSTEM for REPAIRS, PATCHES, INSTALLATIONS, CONCRETE RENOVATION and REPLACEMENT.

Unlike concrete, latex, modified concrete and other mixes, it PERMANENTLY repairs, bonds, rebuilds and resurfaces:

SUGGESTED USES

Repair, patching or resurfacing of floors, stairs, parking areas, service stations, manufacturing areas, columns, sidewalks, driveways, pitted and spalled concrete, terrazzos, window sills, railings, structural and decorative components.

Installation and anchoring of machinery, equipment, frames, sculptures, structures and accessories by simple troweling or pouring in the same manner as a concrete mix, but with the adhesion, permanence, strength and chemical resistance no concrete can provide.

Special versions are also available for applications in sub-freezing weather and under water.

DIRECTIONS

Surface preparation

Surfaces should be sound, clean, dry and free of loose matter.

Oil, grease, wax and old paint should be removed with detergents, solvents or strippers, and the surface thoroughly rinsed, dried and vacuumed. Some contamination or tough coating can be removed with flame. Sand blasting is preferred whenever practical. “Laitance” (deceptively sound-looking surface of new concrete) must be removed with sandblasting or 10-15% muriatic acid etch, which must then be rinsed, neutralized with soda-ash solution and rinsed thoroughly. Thin cracks should be deepened and widened enough to facilitate filling with the ABOCRETE grout.

SURFACE PREPARATION is the indispensable prerequisite for a good result. For this reason, it may be the longest and most expensive step. If in doubt, call us for advice.

Mixing

Remove the contents from the 5-gallon pail (or smaller container, in the case of smaller kits). Empty the cans of A (resin) and B (hardener) back into the pail (or other deep container), and mix thoroughly. In warm conditions, if all of the resin and hardener are mixed at one time, they may harden too quickly. In such conditions, small amounts of resin and hardener should be mixed in the ration indicated on the can label in a smaller container to avoid too fast hardening. After 2-3 minutes of mixing, add the desired amount of sand while stirring, and mix completely. Dry concrete powder or pigments can be added to color the blend while stirring.

The SAND packaged in the kit is the grade mostly used, but finer or coarser sand, as well as grit, chips, pebbles or gravel can be chosen to fit particular requirements. The finer the sand, the more it thickens the blend. One gallon of resin-hardener blend may be extended up to 10 gallons if the proper combination of sand and aggregates is chosen. Addition of sand and aggregates is most desirable, especially in thicker sections, in order to reduce the differences of coefficient of thermal expansion between resin and substratum. Thicker layers of unfilled resin may separate or crack because of its higher contraction/expansion in cold and warm weather.

The sand or aggregate to be blended must be clean and dry. If too much filler is used, the blend becomes too dry and it will bond poorly.

Excess of sand can proportionately reduce tensile and flexural strength. On the other hand, fibrous fillers like fiberglass or fabrics tend to improve tensile and flexural properties. Compressive strength is much less affected. Rocks can be used as fillers (preferably graded with gravel and sand) in larger cavities and cracks. For structural projects, combinations with sand, rods, rebars, beams, wires or fiberglass can be used, to obtain strength to match or surpass that of steel.

If only a portion of the kit is needed, pour the desired amount of A (not more than can be applied in 20-40 minutes) into a smaller container (taller than wide; not on a board or shallow tray), and add the corresponding amount of B in the ratio indicated on the can label; mix and add the sand as above described. If properly sealed in their original containers, A and B will remain usable almost indefinitely, unlike other resins with short shelf life.

When the resin/hardener blend, neat or with filler, is to be applied in thin layers, an induction period of 5-10 minutes should be observed; that is, the blend must rest for that period in the mixing container before using it. This allows the resin/hardener reaction to progress to the point that the ambient moisture or CO2 cannot affect it and cause incomplete “oily” hardening. When the atmosphere is dry, or when heat is used for curing, or where the ABOCRETE blend is applied very thick, the induction period is not necessary. On the other hand, when the mixing is done on a board or shallow tray in high relative humidity, or when wet sand is blended in at the start of mixing, the induction period cannot help.

If thinning is required, we recommend ABOSOLV, a versatile solvent that can be added in any concentration to the ABOCRETE blend to use it as a thin primer coating. For thick coating or patches, no more than 5-6% solvent should be tolerated, as it remains entrapped in the mass. ABOSOLV is also used for cleanup of tools and surfaces.

Coverage

One gallon of ABOCRETE, neat or filled, yields 231 cubic inches: the maximum coverage any material can offer. That is: 1 gallon covers 1,600, 160, 16, or 1.6 square feet in thicknesses of, respectively, 1/1000, 1/100, 1/10 or 1 inch.

Hardening and Curing

Under controlled conditions, at 68°F (20°C) about 1-pint (473 cc) mass of standard, unfilled ABOCRETE A/B blend hardens in about 45-70 minutes, and about 1-quart (946 cc) mass in about 30-60 minutes. When sand is added, the hardening time increases as the percentage of sand increases because the sand absorbs the reaction heat proportionately. A thin, brushed layer of ABOCRETE needs 2 or more hours to harden, depending on the substratum, temperature, thickness and also unforeseen circumstances. In general, the larger the bulk, the faster the hardening. The thinner the layer, the slower the hardening. Also, the higher the temperature, the faster the hardening; the lower the temperature, the slower the hardening. Normal temperatures of application are between 60°F (15°C) and 85°F (29°C). Too low temperatures may hinder the hardening. Special handling or special formulations are available for very high or very low (eve subfreezing) temperatures. In all case, however, the user is urged to verify the feasibility and properties under his own special conditions. “Curing” is called the completed reaction, or the progression toward the point at which the optimum properties (rigidity, physical strength, chemical and heat resistance) have been reached. After hardening, the curing reaction continues for days or weeks, by itself, at room temperature, or it can be accelerated to a few hours with heating. For instance, 2-3 hours at 212°F (100°C) may have a same effect of 2-3 weeks at room temperature.

Application

THE A/B BLEND filled WITH SAND, GRAVEL OR AGGREGATE can be spread, troweled or poured. It can also be cast into forms, like concrete. The mixture (1 volume A/B blend with 2 or more volumes sand-aggregate) is not only much less expensive, but superior to the unfilled A/B blend for patching, filling and resurfacing, as the fillers correct the coefficient of thermal expansion. THERE IS NO BETTER GROUT FOR STRUCTURAL STRENGTH AND PERMANENCE. It bonds tenaciously to concrete, masonry, wood, metal and most rigid materials. It does not shrink (especially when heavily filled) and it can be cast or troweled even thicker than one foot.

THE A/B BLEND WITHOUT SAND can be poured, spread, brushed or sprayed. It hardens in any thickness, but it is recommended mainly for very thin coatings on surfaces that require no primers. It will harden into a transparent film or mass as hard as concrete, and as smooth as glass. For a NON-SLIP FLOOR, coat the surface with the A/B blend, then broadcast sand on it to cover the resin completely. A few hours later, when the resin has hardened, the excess of sand is swept off. The resulting surface will be uniform and more durable than concrete.

This method is used to cover the entire surface where patches have been made with the filled ABOCRETE grout. The resulting surface is so smooth and uniform that the patches are no longer visible.

The unfilled A/B blend can be diluted 2/1, 1/1 or 1/2 with ABOSOLV, and so rolled, brushed or sprayed as a primer for solventless (filled or unfilled) A/B blend.

For cold, even sub-freezing weather, and/or on wet surfaces, ABOCRETE A (resin) can be blended with ABOCURE 7912-1 (hardener) in a ratio of 2 parts by volume ABOCRETE A with 1 part by volume ABOCURE 7912-1 for patching and resurfacing.
