Company History

Xella Aircrete North America Inc. is a division of Xella International—the world’s largest manufacturer of Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC). HEBEL AAC pre-cast panels and blocks have been used for more than 70 years to build quality hotels, schools, industrial and commercial facilities, and residences in more than 30 countries. HEBEL AAC meets standards including ASTM, UL, MSJC and ICC—and being environmentally-responsible, it helps contribute to Energy Star ratings and LEED certification.

HEBEL Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) is ultra lightweight concrete with a unique cellular structure that provides fire resistance, superior energy efficiency and acoustical properties. Developed in 1923 at the Royal Technical Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, AAC was patented under the brand name YTONG. In 1945, Josef Hebel invented a method of producing reinforced AAC panels by incorporating steel into the manufacturing process, and patented reinforced AAC with the brand HEBEL.

Today, the experience and knowledge linked to the two brands of HEBEL and YTONG have secured Xella as the world’s leader of AAC production- with a team of 7,600 at work in 30 countries across the Americas, Europe and Asia.

A Better Way to Build – Features of HEBEL AAC

  • Fire Resistant – noncombustible, highest hourly fire ratings per inch, providing four-hour rating (UL U920 &K909)
  • Energy Efficient – outstanding thermal properties maintain comfortable temperatures with less energy
  • Durable – can be produced as reinforced panels, which becomes an unbeatable combination of strength and durability
  • Workability – a lightweight crane is the basic tool for panel placement, blocks are assembled similar to traditional masonry work. HEBEL AAC can easily be cut and shaped with traditional wood working tools. Mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems can be accommodated with HEBEL AAC cored and U-shaped units or by routing out the units after installation. The speed and ease of overall structure assembly minimizes labor costs
  • Lightweight – approximately one-fourth the weight of traditional concrete, saving freight and increasing speed of construction
  • Environmentally Responsible – main ingredients; sand, lime and water, are natural and abundant. No volatile compounds are emitted and by-products can be recycled back into the production process. Manufacture of AAC requires little energy compared to other masonry products, and low ratio of material consumption to final product
  • Sound Absorbent – contains remarkable sound insulation and absorption qualities
  • Wind Resistance – modular components designed to withstand wind loads up to 150 mph
  • Sustainable – resistant to mold, termites and no cavity for rodents, eliminating pest control costs. AAC allows the diffusion of moisture vapor, helping to moderate moisture levels within a building
  • Seismic Integrity – units are bonded together with a thin bed mortar creating a monolithic wall with an exceptionally tight bond. Vertical and/or horizontal reinforcement can be added for additional seismic resistance

Solutions and Results

HEBEL AAC provides solutions to many problems faced in the construction industry.

  • Speed and ease of overall structure assembly minimizes labor costs
  • Faster construction as a result of quick on-site assembly of blocks and panels
  • Natural ability of AAC to diffuse water vapor helps control moisture and mold, reducing delays due to wet building conditions and potentially removes stages from the construction critical path
  • Healthier indoor air quality and comfortable temperatures
  • Reduction of life-cycle costs like maintenance, insurance rates and energy costs
