Pure Iron

While wrought iron has been part of the architecture and culture of Europe for thousands of years, it is accurate to say that the United States is only now beginning to appreciate the significant advantages of this beautiful and practical material as a true building product. The blacksmiths of Europe brought the trade to America and used wrought iron for tool-making and in more artistic applications. This is still the case today, and we encourage these craftsmen and the reawakening of the art form.

Thousands of forged architectural designs are presently available. These pages only show the most popular stock items that enable you to create unique classic fabrications. We are continuously adding new designs not shown, send us your inquiry for availability.

Materials are shipped in raw component form to allow for easier modifications to fit specific requirements. Wagner does not provide fabrication services and it is strongly recommended that you consult with a qualified fabricator and/or designer as you begin forming your ideas.

Pure Iron is the choice for art and forged metal work with superior malleability, excellent weldability, corrosion resistant and it holds heat about 40% longer than mild steel.

Its great malleability eases forging. Pure Iron has a critical working range between 1,580 and 1,920 degrees (860 and 1,050 degrees Centigrade) and must not be hot worked at or between these temperature limits. When the iron is worked within the limits of the critical range, it is likely to check or break. Pure Iron must be hot worked between 800 and 1560 degrees Fahrenheit (430 and 850 degrees Celsisus) -- red black to cherry red) and 1,940 and 2,280 degrees Fahrenheit (1,060 and 1,250 degrees Celsius) -- yellow to bright yellow.

Due to its high metallurgical purity, its homogenous grain structure, and its very low carbon content, Pure Iron has excellent welding qualities.

Pure Iron has a better resistance to electrolytic corrosion at grain boundaries between the iron crystal and interstitial elements. It is more resistant to atmospheric corrosion than normal mid steels, due to a formation of cohesive adherent layer of rust which naturally protects the underlying iron.

Pure Iron has a superior resistance to rusting as compared with mild steel. Oxidation is an important consideration where hot working or high temperature processing is involved. Oxide scale not only restricts heat transfer but also reduces the effective material thickness.

Pure Iron shows greater protective scale whereas mild steel shows incoherent layers of scale which easily flakes off to expose fresh areas of metal for further attack.

Available sizes include square bar 20mm x 20mm, round bar 20mm, and 35mm, and rectangular bar 10mm x 20mm and 10mm x 25mm. This material is stocked in 2’, 4’ and 6’ lengths, random lengths are available. Contact Wagner for pricing.
