PPG Industries is a global supplier of coatings, glass, fiber glass and chemicals. The Pittsburgh-based company was established in 1883 as the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co. and now operates 50 production facilities in the United States and 120 worldwide. It has grown to become an $8.8 billion dollar international company with more than 34,000 employees and over 100 plants. PPG is owned by about 95,000 shareholders, which includes approximately 25,000 employees and retirees.

PPG Metal Coil & Extrusion Coatings group is part of the Industrial Coatings business unit of PPG Industries, Inc. PPG is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of coatings for steel and aluminum coil as well as coatings for aluminum extrusions. Spray coatings are electrostatically applied to pre-formed aluminum components such as curtainwalls, store fronts, windows and louvers. Coil coatings are roll-coated onto aluminum and clad steel sheet metal, which is post-formed into architectural components such as sandwich panels, siding and roofing. Coil and Extrusion Coatings are used to impart durable, colorful aesthetics in a wide range of applications including metal building products for residential and non-residential construction, appliances, auto parts, truck trailer/recreational vehicles, metal furniture and metal signage. The products are available through a network of authorized PPG applicators.

PPG’s Metal Coil and Extrusion Coatings business is a full-service organization offering technical and sales support for applicators, architects, designers, specification writers, building owners and metal product manufacturers. This support includes coatings selection assistance, color matching, electronic color services, the industry’s largest color databases, remote diagnostic capabilities and immediate access to product information via the World Wide Web (www.industrial-coatings.com).

PPG Building Products Glossary

PPG Extrusion Coatings Glossary
Extrusion coatings are intended for factory spray-application over pretreated aluminum building components such as store front, curtainwall, windows, plate panels and louvers.

AAMA: American Architectural Manufacturers Association.

Acrynar® FX coating: Ultra durable fluoropolymer extrusion coatings which meet the AAMA 2604 performance specification. These hard, yet smooth coatings are recommended for high traffic areas such as storefronts, schools, hospitals and high-rise condominiums.

Coraflon® EX coating: Second-generation thermosetting fluoropolymer coatings which are spray-applied. These coatings are available in rich, vivid colors and a full range of glosses. Coraflon EX coatings are a minimum two coat system composed of a universal primer and a fluoropolymer topcoat for use over properly cleaned and pretreated aluminum substrates. They are an ideal choice for applications such as doors, windows or sash extrusions, handrails, poles, exterior light fixtures, fences and many others.

Duracron® coating: Acrylic-based coatings with performance equal to that of Polycron III finishes. These coatings meet the AAMA 2603 performance specification and are recommended for interior, residential, institutional and light commercial applications.

Duranar® coating: High-performance coatings which exceed the AAMA 2605 performance specification. These coatings are based on ultra-durable pigments and fluoropolymer resin technology. Duranar coatings are a minimum two-coat system, consisting of a primer and a durable color coat. Seventy percent of the Duranar coating resin system consists of either Kynar 500® resin manufactured by ATOFINA Chemicals, Inc. or Hylar 5000® resin manufactured by Solvay Solexis, Inc. Recommended for use in normal environments when added protection against industrial or seacoast influences is not required.

Duranar® Sunstorm™ coating: A 2-coat Duranar coating where the color coat contains mica pearlescent flakes.

Duranar® XL coating: A Duranar coating with a clear topcoat added. The XL topcoat is required over some brightly pigmented Duranar coatings and all colors containing metallic flakes in order to protect against ultraviolet, humidity and chemical attack. For added protection, the XL clear topcoat may be specified over any Duranar coating to improve the overall performance and ease of maintenance of the finish system.

“Exotic” pigmentation: The term “exotic” refers to the bright or deep pigmentation used to formulate certain colors. It does not indicate the number of coats required. The concentration and combination of exotic pigments in a specific color will affect the price of the product.

Polycron® III coating: High-solids polyester coatings formulated to comply with recent environmental air quality regulations. These coatings meet the AAMA 2603 performance specification and are recommended for interior, residential, institutional or light commercial applications.

PPG Coil Coatings Glossary
Coil coatings are intended for factory coil application over aluminum or zinc-clad steel substrates such as sidewall or composite panels, standing seam roofing, soffit, fascia or column covers.

Coraflon® MC coating: Second-generation thermosetting fluoropolymer coatings that are available in bright colors with a full gloss range. The coatings are two or three coats designed for use over properly cleaned and pretreated aluminum and steel substrates. They are an excellent choice for applications such as gas station buildings, canopies, building panels, roofs, signs, billboards, truck trailers, fences and many others.

Duracron® coating: A 1-coat acrylic coating for aluminum and steel substrates.

Duranar® coating: High-performance coatings based on ultra-durable pigments and fluoropolymer resin technology.

Duranar® 2000/4000/5000 coating: Multi-coat, thick film systems consisting of one or more coats of corrosion inhibitive primers with a fluoropolymer color topcoat.

Duranar® Plus coating: A 2-coat thick-film primer system for aggressive environments.

Duranar® SPF coating: Infrared reflective coatings that meet ENERGY STAR® specifications for roof products.

Duranar® XL Plus coating: A 3-coat system for severely aggressive environments.

Duranar® XLE coating: A 3- or 4-coat system for normal and aggressive environments available in bright exotic colors and metallics.

Environ® coating: A 2-coat waterborne acrylic coating for aluminum substrates.

Environ® ST coating: A 2-coat waterborne acrylic coating for steel substrates.

“Exotic” pigmentation: The term “exotic” refers to the bright or deep pigmentation used to formulate certain colors. It does not indicate the number of coats required. The concentration and combination of exotic pigments in a specific color will affect the price of the product.

Truform® coating: A 1- or 2-coat polyester system for interior aluminum or zinc-clad steel.

Truform® HS coating: A 1-coat or 2-coat polyester system for aluminum or steel substrates. The increased volume solids content provides applicator benefits through production line efficiencies.

Truform® SP coating: A 2-coat silicone polyester system for aluminum or steel substrates.

Truform® ZT coating: A 1- or 2-coat polyester system that is specially formulated for use in applications that require exceptional flexibility to accommodate severe forming and embossing operations.

NCCA: National Coil Coaters Association

PPG Field-applied Spray Coatings Glossary

Field-applied spray coatings are intended for field application over properly cleaned and pretreated aluminum, steel, concrete, glass or plastic substrates.

Coraflon® ADS coating: Second-generation thermosetting fluoropolymer coatings, which are also available in the same bright colors and high gloss ranges as the Coraflon EX and Coraflon MC coatings. They are a minimum two-coat system composed of a universal primer and a fluoropolymer topcoat. They are an excellent choice for applications such as gas station buildings, pylons, canopies, building panels, roofs, doors, windows or sash extrusions, handrails, decks, signs, billboards, poles, stairs, exterior light fixtures, fences and many others.
