EcoLogical Building Solutions

For more than 70 years, since PPG introduced the world's first heat-absorbing, energy-efficient glass, the company has been a leader in the advancement of glass technology. Today, our trusted family of Solarban® z50, Solarban 60, Solarban 70XL and Solarban 80 solar control, low-e glasses delivers the industry's best combination of visible light transmittance, solar control and insulating performance.

PPG also is home to the Oceans of Color collection of spectrally selective tinted glass, which encompasses Atlantica glass, Azuria glass, Caribia® glass and Solexia glass. These four ocean-inspired tints, which range from light green to a deep aqua-blue, have light to solar (LSG) ratios from 1.41 to 1.56 when combined with clear glass in a standard one-inch insulating glass unit. They also can be combined with Solarban 70XL glass and Solarban 60 glass to achieve even better solar control performance.

Through their exceptional combinations of visible light transmittance (VLT) and solar heat gain coefficients (SHGC), these advanced glazing product can help architects satisfy LEED prerequisites in LEED categories related to energy performance and daylighting and views.

PPG also is proud to be the first and only glass manufacturer in the U.S. to earn Cradle to Cradle Certification for its entire collection of architectural glass products. Buildings that incorporate a minimum percentage of Cradle to Cradle Certified products may be eligible to earn LEED credit for the Innovation in Design category. Only glazing contractors and glass fabricators who sell PPG glass can offer architects this potential benefit.

PPG Glass Products

Solarban 70XL glass is a technological breakthrough in solar control, low-e glass that creates the industry's best combination of visible light transmittance and solar control, together in a clear, color-neutral aesthetic.

An independent energy and environmental research firm used 288 energy simulations for two common building types in climates across North America to compare energy performance Solarban 70XL glass and other commonly specified architectural glasses. The testing revealed that, depending on the size, type and climate of the building, Solarban 70XL glass has the potential to save architects and building owners hundreds of thousands of dollars in upfront capital cooling costs when it is specified. Additionally, Solarban 70XL glass has the potential to produce annual energy savings of up to 13%, as well as reduce CO2 emissions by thousands of tons over the lifetime of a typical commercial building.

Solarban z50 glass is a new solar control, low-e glass that incorporates a proprietary coating to exhibits low interior and exterior reflectance, while still providing high levels of visible light transmittance and solar control. Available in an attractive array of blue-green tints, Solarban z50 glass has light to solar gain (LSG) ratios that are up to 30 percent better than competing tinted glasses.

Solarban 60 solar control, low-e glass is ideal for architects seeking to manage infrared heat gain while capitalizing on the benefits of natural daylight. With its clear, neutral appearance, Solarban 60 glass can be combined in insulating glass units with clear glass – or an outboard lite of PPG tinted or reflective glass – to give architects numerous aesthetic and environmental performance options. For the ultimate combination of color fidelity and solar control, PPG offers Solarban 60 Starphire®glass, which joins the transparency of Starphire glass with the proven performance of Solarban60 solar control, low-e glasses.

Solarban80 remains one of the industry's best performing low-e glazings, but now has greater versatility. Traditionally applied to clear glass with a clear interior lite, the Solarban 80 glass coating is now available with an interior lite of Optiblue® glass or an Optiblue glass with a clear or Optiblue interior light. All Solarban 80 glasses maintain excellent solar heat gain coefficients (SHGC) and are available with light to solar gain (LSG) ratios from 1.23 to 1.9.

With more than 200 million square feet shipped in the last decade, Sungate® 500 low-e glass is one of the industry's most trusted and proven products. Thanks to the increased emphasis on energy efficiency, the value of this proven technology continues to multiply. In certain geographic areas, the ability of Sungate 500 Low-E glass to transmit the warming rays of the sun (as measured by its higher Solar Heat Gain Coefficient) can lower heating requirements.

On their own, or combined with spectrally selective tints from the Oceans of Color collection by PPG, Solarban solar control, low-e or Sungate 500 passive low-e glasses offer architects an unparalleled selection of aesthetics and performance.
