Metropolitan Ceramics by Ironrock is the leading manufacturer of unglazed ceramic quarry tile in the U.S. Metropolitan Ceramics' tiles are available in both kiln-flashed colors and single tones. Metropolitan Ceramics includes ENVIROQUARRY®, with in excess of 50% pre-consumer recycled content.
For interior and exterior applications in any climate. Metropolitan quarry tile has an unglazed slip-resisting surface. Metropolitan tile is appropriate for heavy traffic areas subject to spills and moisture.
Key features of Metropolitan Ceramics unglazed tile include a tight die skin (low absorption) surface, and a variety of natural through-the-body colors. Metropolitan quarry tile is available in 1/2-in. and 3/8-in. thickness, and is designed with relieved cushioned edges. Square edge products are also available.

Metropolitan Ceramics' unglazed tile meets both the ASTM standards, the ANSI A 137.1 specification for quarry tile, and Metropolitan internal requirements as listed.
- Abrasion resistance: ASTM C501. Index of 35 or better. Metropolitan tests at >80 or better.
- Absorption 5-hour boil: ASTM C373. Standard is 5%. Metropolitan internal standard is 3% maximum, qualifies as vitreous.
- Breaking strength: ASTM C648. Min. 250-lb. Metropolitan tests at 400-lb. plus.
- Compressive Strength: ASTM C67. No industry standard. Metropolitan tests at 10,000 psi or better.
- Shear Bond Strength: ASTM C482. 50 P.S.I. or better.
- Static Coefficient of Friction: ASTM C1028. No industry standard. At time of manufacture, Metropolitan Colors meet or exceed measure 0.70 dry and 0.60 wet (0.90 dry and 0.70 wet for x-colors and Metro Tread).
