Restoration SkylightsThere is no need to replace a skylight in a historically sensitive building with a modern looking skylight in order to gain improved performance. Linel has been designing systems to match sensitive historic profiles while incorporating modern performance values for many years. We think there is a strong future in historic renovation.
Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum New York City, New York Frank Lloyd Wright, Architect / Wank Adams Slavin Preservation Linel was provided the first ever replacement skylights at the Thannhauser Gallery and in the Main Rotunda Gallery of this masterpiece. Both locations required compliance with New York City Landmark Preservation regulations that historic profiles, dimensions and even hardware elements be kept true to the original historic profiles of the skylight framing. Our demanding challenge was to engineer, fabricate and install the double helix skylights following the Rotunda Gallery at the exterior perimeter ramp. The geometry and diameter change constantly up the helix. For building expansion, movement of +3/4 to -3/4 inches had to be accommodated in a dihedral direction-outward and downward. High performance self-cleaning warm edge insulating glass and thermal break frame were included to achieve better energy efficiency and meet sound control requirements.
Corcoran Gallery of Art Washington, D.C. John Milner Associates, Inc., Architect This was a two-stage design-build contract to replace the original 1890s steel skylights with a modern system that replicates the original sizes and spacing including the five custom rafter caps. This was done to satisfy a requirement to maintain the original aesthetic profiles. The first phase of construction is the replacement of 22,000 square feet of wire glass skylight with high performance light monitoring insulated glass a total of five different light transmissions. The work was coordinated with the Corcoran Gallery so that the skylights are replaced during the transition between exhibits to minimize the impact on the staff, students and the general public.
