Helen DeVos Children's Hospital Bridge

This custom unitized slope glazing system is an extremely complex design for this spectacular bridge. In all, there are 13,462 total square feet of glass composed of 628 pieces with no two alike. 18 custom dies were produced to accomplish the architect's design. The four sided butt glazed system consists of 117 unique unit planes made up of several pieces of glass. Structural channels were applied to the glass to facilitate replacement.

Linel was chosen to assist the architect with the design concept and provide the custom bi-radiused sunscreens, vestibules and zinc crown.

The rotunda features a dual radius, tighter at the ends with a larger radius in the main portion. The top crown is comprised of a zinc outer ring, 36 inches deep by 24 feet long, stretch formed to a true radius and connecting to secondary supports. Primary supports were clad with custom finished aluminum panels to match zinc. True zinc panel fascia panels are just behind the upper crown. Four successive lower sun shade rings are in segmented sections, all following the varying radii. The entrance vestibule has stainless steel cladding and a cantilevered glass roof. Linel engineered, fabricated and installed all exterior work at the rotunda except the glazing, structural steel and roof. The interir convector grilles and covers were custom fabricated to follow the compound radii.

We provided engineering, manufacturing and installation of this unique and stunning glazed structure, including the sloped glazing elements and the vertical glazed end-walls. The glazed structure provides a soaring focal point that brings in the outdoors to a large multi-function atrium space below.

The 2-3/8” wide rafter segmented vault was engineered to accommodate side to side sway movement of the entire glazed structure. Triple tiered guttering was used for positive control of any infiltration. Clear low E insulated glazing was selected for HVAC economy.
