Product Description:
University Seating features welded steel frames which support solid core continuous table tops with optional PowerUp for surface access to power and data outlets. Self-returning swivel seats offer ergonomic support and maximum comfort for better student retention.

Specifications:
Seating shall be University Seating as manufactured by KI, Green Bay, WI.

University Seating shall be floor-mounted bases with swing-away arms in single or double seat units, with shells mounted to swing arms. Floor-mounted bases shall also provide support for continuous tops. Sloped floors can be accommodated.

Materials

A. Frames
University Seating bases are standard with Piretti Torsion, Piretti Stack, Piretti 2000 Task, Piretti Managerial, 1000 Poly, Dorsal and Vertebra. Bases are constructed of 14-gauge seam-welded tubular steel, 2" x 4" from floor plate to junction box, 2" x 2" from junction box to table mounting plate, welded into an integral unit. Table mounting plate at the top of the base is 11-gauge, 6" x 8" die-formed steel plate with two oval holes, 3/4" x 1-1/2", to allow for power and cable access and eight pierced holes to secure top to base with screws (furnished). Floor mounting flange is 11-gauge, 6" x 8" die-formed steel plate with 1/2" holes pierced in each corner for anchoring into floor. Base is secured to floor with four 3/8" bolts (not furnished) for each base. Bases can be specified with a 2" x 4" cutout on both sides of the base at the bottom to allow for power or communication/data cable access. Power must be specified separately. Cutout shall have a metal cover painted to match the base. Plastic flange covers are furnished for all bases. Swing-away seat is mounted at end of horizontal beam 1-1/2" x 2", 11-gauge, hinged at cantilevered frame junction box. Construction of die-formed, heavy-gauge collar with polyacetal copolymer thermoplastic bearings at 8-gauge die-formed steel junction box. Spring-activated return is completely enclosed; all moving parts are protected by covers to prevent injury. Swing beam collar with bushings is anchored in junction box with allen head bolt, lock washers and hex nut. Seat swivels on 3/4" diameter post welded to seat spider and inserted into 1-3/4" tubular column welded to 1-1/2" x 2", 11-gauge horizontal beam. Nylon upper cams and PBT lower cams control rotation and memory return with spring tension. Slots in column allow adjustment of the seat in the field to parallel the edge of the table top. Swivel mechanism, upper and lower cams, spring and interior of seam column are lubricated for rotation. Optional extended swing arm is available to accommodate 30" seat spacing, or 360 degree swivel.

B. Table Tops and Modesty Panels
University Seating Table Tops shall be nominal 1-1/4" thick, warp-resistant construction. To have a center core of 1-1/8" thick Novoply particleboard, minimum of 45 lbs. PCF density. The top surface shall be a minimum of .040" thick high-pressure laminate meeting NEMA standards and the bottom surface, .020" thick backing sheet. Laminate and backing sheet shall be permanently bonded to particleboard core using a cross-linking Poly Vinyl Acetate (PVA) adhesive under continuous pressure in a hot press. Edges shall be slotted to receive extruded-vinyl bullnose molding 1-1/4" wide with barbed "T" inserted into a routed groove in the solid Novoply core and held in place with nails spaced approximately 12" apart, driven into the "T" from the underside. Other standard table edges include PVC, self edge, tread edge, impact edge and various wood edge styles. The table top ends shall have corners with minimum 1-1/2" radius. Continuous table top joints shall be secured with a minimum of two mechanical fasteners equal to Knape & Voight #516, hardwood spline and heavy-gauge steel plate under joint. Standard width, 18"; standard length 27" or 30" table top surface per seating station. Available in choice of straight, radiused, or truncated configurations to match the demands of the room layout. Tops shall have cutouts to accept PowerUp modules when PowerUp is specified.

University Seating Modesty Panels shall be nominal .810" thick warp-resistant construction in straight or curved configurations. Center core shall be .75" thick Novoply particleboard, minimum of 45 lbs. PCF density. The front surface shall be minimum of .040" thick high-pressure laminate meeting NEMA standards and the back surface, .020" thick backing sheet. Edges shall be slotted to receive extruded vinyl bullnose molding 7/8" wide with barbed "T" inserted into a routed groove in the solid Novoply core and held in place with nails spaced approximately 8" apart, driven into the "T" from the back. The modesty panel ends shall have corners with minimum 1-1/2" radius. Modesty panels are segmented with 1/2" space between panels in conjunction with table joints. Modesty panels shall be secured to the table top with modesty panel brackets and screws (furnished). Optional continuous modesty panels are available.

Optional Perforated Steel or Dimpled Steel Modesty panels shall be constructed of 14-gauge steel with .75" hems on horizontal edges. Straight or curved configurations are available in non continuous panels. Perforated steel panels shall have .25" holes on .75" spacing. Dimpled steel panels shall have .08" deep dimples recessed on 1.5" spacing. Finish shall be in clear coat or powdercoat in 5 standard colors.

Optional Perforated Wood Veneer Modesty Panels shall available as continuous panels in straight or curved configurations. Finish shall be Clear Oak, Clear Maple, Cherry stain on Maple, Mahagony Stain on Maple, or Walnut stain on Maple.

C. Shells
1. Piretti Torsion
Seats and backrests are molded compound curved polypropylene with a textured finish. Seat is two piece construction. Two die cast aluminum backrest supports attach the backrest to the Torsion mechanism. A steel tube is cast into each backrest support for added strength. The back flex is achieved by the Torsion mechanism. It consists of two flat torsion springs captured at both ends by brass bushings which in turn engage with the backrest supports. The Torsion mechanism creates gradually increasing resistance over the full 12 degrees of back flex. Upholstered chairs have partially exposed polypropylene surfaces. Fabric is upholstered over 9/16" foam on the backrest and 1-1/2" foam on the seat.

2. Piretti Stack
Seats and backrests shall be molded compound curved polypropylene with a textured finish. Backrest edges shall have an integral channel into which upholstery is secured. Upholstered chairs shall have partially exposed polypropylene surfaces. Upholstery covers 1/2" foam on the backrest and 3/4" foam on the seat. Molded plastic seat liner covers the seat underside. The back shall tilt 15 degrees. Two hidden lever mechanisms which respond to the user’s weight shall be located in the seat. Each has a double cam action. The rear cam shall be tied to the back structure and shall be set in motion when the occupant leans back. This, in turn, through a spring linkage, shall activate the front cam at a slightly different ratio (1-1/2 to 1). The mechanism shall consist of stamped-steel frame and levers, a steel spring and molded Delrin and nylon components. It shall be calibrated at the factory and shall need no further adjustment.

3. Piretti 2000 Task
Seat and back innerstructure shall be constructed of 1/2" thick 7-ply plywood. Molded foam shall be glued to the plywood and covered with upholstery fabric. A molded plastic seat liner shall cover the seat underside, and a molded plastic back shroud shall cover the back of the chair. A fully-upholstered back is also available. An adjustable-height back shall be available as standard allowing 21/4" of vertical travel in five incremental steps, which shall lock and unlock automatically without levers. An optional adjustable back-angle inclination shall also be available in a range from 87 degrees to 100 degrees. The user shall be able to infinitely vary the angle of the inclination of the back by raising a lever. Two hidden lever mechanisms which respond to the user’s weight shall be located in the seat. Each has a double-cam action. The rear cam shall be tied to the back structure and shall be set in motion when the occupant leans back. This, in turn, through a spring linkage, shall activate the front cam at a slightly different ratio (1-1/2 to 1). The mechanism shall consist of stamped- steel frame and levers, a steel spring and molded Delrin and nylon components. It shall be calibrated at the factory and need no further adjustment.

4. Piretti Managerial (1000)
Seat innerstructure shall be constructed of a plastic pan to which foam is glued and upholstery is attached. Backrest innerstructure shall be formed of molded plastic and foam shall be molded, front and back, over the plastic inner back. Molded-foam bellows shall connect the seat and backrest. A molded plastic seat liner shall cover the seat underside. The back tilt shall be 17 degrees. Two hidden-lever mechanisms which respond to the user’s weight shall be located in the seat. Each has a double-cam action. The rear cam shall be tied to the back structure and shall be set in motion when the occupant leans back. This, in turn, through a spring linkage, shall activate the front cam at a slightly different ratio (11/2 to 1). The mechanism shall consist of stamped-steel frame and levers, a steel spring and molded Delrin and nylon components. It shall be calibrated at the factory and need no further adjustment.

5. 1000 Series Polypropylene
One-piece molded seats and back-rest design on high-impact polypropylene. Rolled edges and ribs under seat for extra strength. Nominal flex plus textured surfaces provide good posture support and discourage slouch seating. Four molded-in sills on underside of shell attach to spider with hi-lo screws. Upholstery available (see following option).

6. Dorsal Shell
Two-piece injection-molded thermoplastic seat and backrest with textured seat and backrest surface, on front only. Seat and backrests are joined by a maintenance-free steel hinge with integral spring mechanism which allows the upper back to articulate with pressure. The hinge to be covered with high-strength plastic bellows. Four molded-in sills on underside of seat attach to spider with hi-lo screws. Upholstery available (see following option).

7. Vertebra Operational Shell
Seat and backrest of injection-molded thermoplastic. Automatic mechanism allows backrest to tilt and seat to slide forward and return to original rest position without the need for levers or controls. Backrest automatic tilting mechanism covered with high-strength rubber/vinyl bellows. Seat slide controls encased inside thermoplastic seat. Seat mounted on heavy-gauge steel beam. Available with erect pitch backrest and upholstery (see following option).

8. Optional Upholstery Pads
1000 and Dorsal series shells. Fixed seat cushion (FS) or fixed seat and back cushions (FSB) are mechanically fastened to front of shell. Foam padded with upholstery cover.

D. PowerUp Components

PowerUp Module
The PowerUp module shall be 6-1/4" long x 3" wide x 2-1/2" high. The module shall be constructed of polycarbonate with a textured finish, meeting UL-VO minimum requirements. The module shall have one duplex receptacle (110 volts) and two ports for data connectors. The standard module will accommodate various connectors. The data connectors and wires shall be purchased by the customer. The module shall have a positive locking device in the open position to allow the unit to remain open when in use and shall be able to close when not in use. The power receptacles shall be located on a vertical plan when in use to avoid accidental spills into the receptacle. The data jacks shall remain stationary to avoid excess wear and tear on the data wire connections. A cord with a three-prong plug, 22" long, shall plug into the 8-wire harness.

8-Wire Harness
The 8-wire harness of flexible conduit shall distribute power between the power/data modules and the power infeed. The harness will be enclosed in a plastic trough with a metal divider to separate power and communication or data cables. The trough shall be constructed of rigid PVC approximately .06" thick. The trough shall be attached to the underside of the worksurface (by the installer) with wood screws provided. The trough shall measure 1.34" deep x 6.2" wide overall with an interior dimension of 5.5 cubic inches. The trough shall include a 24-gauge, L-shaped metal divider measuring 1-1/4" x 1-1/4" and shall be attached to a groove in the trough.

Receptacle Shroud Cover
The receptacle shroud cover shall be made of PVC meeting UL 94-HB, 12" x 14" x 2" vacuum-formed to house the connection of the 8-wire harnesses and the cord from the PowerUp module. A 1-13/16" x 3" opening in the shroud shall allow access to the duplex receptacle. A 1-1/4" radiused slot shall allow access for removal of the PowerUp module.

All electrical components shall be installed on site with hardware provided.

E. Colors

Frame finishes - Powder-coated finish is standard on all frames in a choice of black, sand, warm grey, and blue grey. Plastic trim components match the four standard powder-coated colors. Standard KI fabrics available; C.O.M. (customer’s own material) fabrics require factory approval.

Vinyl bullnose edge is offered in black, sand, blue grey and warm grey.

Optional Top Features - Accent strips, name card slots, bookrails, wire management, PowerUp power/data electrical system, multi-level continuous tops and PVC, self-edge or wood edge with square or radius corners are available at additional costs. Contrasting colors between table tops and modesty panel can be specified.

Optional Top and Modesty Panels depth - Minimum top depth is 18". Maximum top depth 24" (without additional support). Minimum modesty panel depth 9", maximum full height with additional bracketry.

Note: Floor-mounting anchors are not provided.

FLOOR MOUNTING REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Construction Required for Upright Installation

Wood Floors

  • Minimum two layers of 3/4" thickness tongue & groove
  • APA rated grade plywood
  • Allow minimum embedment 1-1/2" with lag screws
  • Use toggle bolt if less than 1-1/2" embedment

Concrete Floors

  • 3000 psi Concrete compressive strength
  • 3" thick free of obstructions for 1-1/2"
  • 4" thick for riser mount free of obstructions for 2-1/2"
  • Riser to be plumb within 1/8 degree
  • Minimum anchor embedment 1-1/2"

Note: Warranty null and void if KI product is installed on flooring not meeting minimum structural requirements stated above.

Floor Fastener Requirements

Wood Floors

  • 5/16" x 1-3/4" lag bolts; grade 5
  • 5/16" flat washers
  • 3/8" toggle bolts

Concrete Floors
