Product Description:
Concerto’s contemporary design provides a fresh look to auditorium seating with its dual steel tubular uprights. Cushioned seats and backs are enclosed in durable polypropylene shrouds. Automatic seat return is accomplished with a gravity lift seat return, ensuring that seats will always return to the upright position. A convenient power and data module is available for lap top computer users. Six seat widths are available for space planning purposes and sight lines (19" – 24"). Options include: 3 tablet arms, aisle lights, seat numbers, row markers, ADA options, end panels, wood arm caps, wood back panel, acoustical seat shroud, and power/data module and distribution system.

Code Requirements - Compliance with the required local and national building and safety codes is the sole responsibility of the Owner/Architect/ Contractor. Shop drawings are based on code requirements for assembly seating as found in BOCA and the Life Safety Code. Code information above is offered for informational purposes only and strictly as a courtesy to the Owner/Architect/Contractor. This is in no way an assumption of duty on the part of KI relative to code interpretation and compliance. KI personnel are not trained for, nor are they experts at code compliance or interpretation.

Field Verification - Shop drawings incorporate building information compiled from various sources associated with this project and deemed as reliable. Conditions directly affecting the product or its installation must be field verified.

Drawing Review - Shop drawings are produced to assure compliance with the contract. Drawings must be reviewed by the Owner/Architect/Contractor, or other appropriate owner's representative. If drawings are correct, mark them as such; if incorrect, note corrections to be made and return to KI for corrections. Any deviations from the contract included in the shop drawing must be approved in writing from the Owner/Architect/ Contractor. Drawing must be signed by authorized personnel including title, company or affiliation, and date. Manufacture of product shown is not scheduled until drawing review is complete and owner's authorized signature is received.

Scope
Seating shall be the "Concerto" as manufactured by KI, Green Bay,WI.

Seating shall be floor mounted, or riser mounted, with common upright support assemblies with upholstered seat and back cushions. The fixed back shall accommodate three pitch positions at 16° , 20° and 24° . The back cushion is protected by an injection molded polypropylene back shroud. The seat cushion shall be counter-balanced with a gravity lift to insure automatic return to vertical position when the seat is unoccupied. Sloped floors will be accommodated.

Compliance
"Concerto" seating shall be designed and manufactured in compliance with the intent of ANSI/BIFMA X5.4-1990. Seating shall exceed all applicable BIFMA performance test criteria.

Sizes
Seating will be manufactured in three seat- and back-widths to accommodate six seat-spacings of 19", 20", 21", 22", 23", and 24" seat-centers. View lines will be accommodated as indicated on the seating plans. Seating with left- or right-hand tablet arms will be manufactured to accommodate 20", 21", 22", 23 and 24" seat center spacings.

Materials

A. Back Cushion Assembly
Structural back shall be a 7-ply, 7/16" molded plywood inner structure bonded within 2" or 3" urethane foam. Foam density shall be 1.8 lbs. per cubic foot and 10 lbs I.L.D. The upholstery fabric shall be bonded to foam and attached through C-Gex® upholstery methods. An injection-molded polypropylene back shroud wraps around the edge of the inner structure board and the foam. The fixed back assembly with integral shroud is mounted to the uprights by four screws bolted through the structural 11-gauge steel inner back brackets. 20", 22" and 24" backs include a plastic spacer mounted between the back bracket and the uprights and held in place with rivets.

Optional wood back panel shall be constructed of 7-ply, 3/8" thick oak or maple veneer. The back panel shall attach to the inner structure board and the foam with hidden steel clips 1/4-20 X 1-1/4" torxhead bolts. The wood back panel assembly shall attach to the uprights by four screws bolted through the structural 11-gauge steel back brackets. The 20", 22" and 24" backs include a plastic spacer mounted between the back bracket and the uprights and held in place with rivets.

The wood back shall extend above the upholstered foam cushion thereby protecting the fabric, and shall extend below the seat at the bottom to protect the seat cushion and allow for power and data distribution when required.

Standard finishes include Oak w/clear coat, Maple w/clear coat, Maple w/cherry stain, Maple w/mahogany stain, or Maple w/walnut stain.

B. Seat Cushion Assembly
The seat assembly shall be constructed of a compound curve inner structure consisting of a 7-ply, 7/16" molded plywood board with waterfall. The seat board counterbalance shall be bolted in place inside the seat assembly. The seat board shall be bonded within a 2" or 3" urethane foam cushion of 1.8 lbs. density per cubic foot and 33 lbs. I.L.D. The upholstery fabric shall be bonded to foam and attached through C-Gex® upholstery methods. The bottom shall be covered by an injection molded polypropylene seat shroud. All pivoting and positioning shall be accomplished within the seat cushion assembly, thereby eliminating all pinch points.

C. Seat Pivot Assembly
Seat pivot shall be an integral part of the seat assembly. Pivot shall include a full width axle of 5/8" diameter cold-rolled steel, with welded 12-gauge drawn steel pivot stop cams and 10-gauge formed steel end brackets. The seat shall pivot on self-aligning acetal bearings, joined to the seat board by die-formed 14-gauge steel housings. Brackets, made of 12- and 10-gauge formed steel and welded to the upright tubes, shall support the seat assembly. Seat assembly shall be fastened to upright brackets by two screws per seat. The optional acoustical seat shroud shall consist of an injection molded polypropylene seat shroud with 0.50" diameter holes spaced 1" apart on the center, flat portion of the shroud. A polyether convoluted foam shall be placed between the inner structural board and the outer acoustical seat shroud for sound absorption. The foam shall be nominal 1/2" to 1" thick and shall be "charcoal" in color. The foam meets CAL 117 flammmability requirements. NRC rating is 0.50.

D. Uprights
Floor mounted uprights shall be 14-gauge steel round dual supports, 1.5" diameter, welded to an 11-gauge steel, 2-5/8" x 10-1/8" floor plate by a concealed weldment. Finish to be powder coated according to standard color offerings.

Riser mounted uprights shall be 14-gauge steel round dual supports, 1.5" diameter, welded to a 3" x 5-1/2" x 1/4" steel riser plate. Finish to be powder coated according to standard color offerings.

E. Arm Cap
Shall be supported by a 14-gauge steel, 2-5/8" wide x 10-1/8" long. Welded to the upright by a concealed weldment.

Arm cap shall be injection molded engineering grade thermoplastic, 2-5/8" wide x 10-1/8" long. Attached to the arm cap support with two concealed screws. A flatter arm cap with same dimensions as above shall be specified with the medium or large tablet arm.

Optional wood arm caps shall be machined 2-5/8" wide x 10-1/8" long. Attached to the arm cap support with two concealed screws. Cannot be specified with medium or large tablet arm.

F. Cupholder Arm Cap - Plastic
Shall be constructed of high-density polyethylene, 2" x 13-1/4" with a 3-3/4" diameter cupholder, molded into one integral unit. Will be sized to accept standard cup sizes and 12oz. cans with bottom element for support. Cannot be specified with tablet arms or Power/Data option.

Cupholder Arm Cap - Wood
Shall be constructed of white oak, 4" x 14" with a 2.69" diameter cupholder, formed into one integral armcap unit. Will be sized to accept standard cup sizes and 12oz. cans. Cannot be specified with tablet arms or Power/Data option.

G. Tablet Arm - Small
Shall be a self-storing, one-motion tablet arm, consisting of a storable writing surface constructed of a core of 11-ply Baltic Birch, 15mm thick, .040" high-pressure laminate on both sides, measuring 9-3/8" x 13" (106 sq. in.). The tablet arm mechanism will consist of a 9/16" dia. black oxide plated slide rod inside a molded glass-reinforced nylon rotator with a 9/16" pivot shaft welded to an 8-gauge pivot plate. A 14-gauge board plate will attach the tablet board to the mechanism. Tablet arm will store between the seats without interfering with adjacent seat.

H. Tablet Arm – Medium
Shall be a self-storing, one-motion tablet arm, consisting of a storable writing surface constructed of a 13-ply (18 mm) Baltic Birch plywood core, .050 high-pressure laminate on face and .040 HPL backer sheet, measuring 10-3/8" x 13-1/4" (159 sq. in.) with a 6-5/8" radius on outside corner to allow a minimum 36" aisle spacing. The tablet arm mechanism will consist of a pivot arm, pivot mount bracket and support bracket constructed of 7-gauge steel with controlled 90° side-to-side rotation and 84° up-and-down rotation. Tablet arm will store underneath the seat at a slight angle, without interfering with the seat.

I. Tablet Arm - Large
Shall be a self-storing, one-motion tablet arm, consisting of a storable writing surface constructed of a 13-ply (18 mm) Baltic Birch plywood core, .050 high-pressure laminate on face and .040 HPL backer sheet, measuring 11-1/2" x 15-1/4" (202 sq. in.) (capable of supporting a laptop computer). The tablet arm mechanism will consist of a pivot arm, pivot mount bracket and support bracket constructed of 7-gauge steel with controlled 90° side-to-side rotation and 84° up-and-down rotation. Tablet arm will store underneath the seat at a slight angle, without interfering with the seat.

J. Aisle Light
Light shall be 24 volt using .04 amps per lamp and will mount to the upright (with or without an end panel). Each aisle light contains four lamps. Transformers are not provided.

K. Decorative End Panels (Optional)
Laminate end panel shall be 5/8" thick MDF particleboard core with .050 high-pressure laminate and .020 thick backer sheet, attached to uprights with six 16-gauge clips and six screws.

Optional wood end panel to have same construction as end panel with veneer over particleboard core. Optional steel end panel shall be 16-gauge steel welded to uprights and painted to match.

Note: Decorative end panels are not available with power and data.

L. Row Markers and Seat Numbers
Markers and numbers shall be .78 x 1.18 ellipse .020 thick lexan film plate, secured with adhesive. Seat numbers shall be recessed on the underside of the seat shroud. Row markers shall be secured to the top surface at the rear of the arm cap. Row markers for optional wood arm caps shall be a brass plate, attached by two screws.

M. ADA Swing Arm
Arm cap support shall be hinged at rear to allow arm cap to flip up, providing easy access for limited mobility occupants.

N. ADA Removable Units
Chairs requiring mobility for handicapped access shall be mounted to a 7-gauge welded frame and shall include 4 glides per upright. One-, two- and three-seat units are available.

O. Power/Data Module and Distribution System
Product shall be designed to bring power and data from the building power source to a position directly below the arm cap to accommodate the requirements of notebook computers in a temporary use situation. The receptacle and data port(s) shall not extend beyond the width of the arm cap and shall not interfere with the seat return. All wires and cables shall be concealed with plastic covers. Wires shall be routed to the module through the center of an upright, concealed with plastic side covers and connected to the six-wire, three-circuit harness system (each circuit provides 20 amps). Fully enclosed wireway covers protect all wires at the bottom of the back shroud as they are routed and connected to each seat. The module shall accommodate one simplex receptacle and a mounting bracket for one or two data jacks per seat. The data jack bracket shall accommodate AT&T, AMP, Levition, Krone, Thomas & Betts, Panduit and Hubbell connectors (data jacks are not provided).

One distribution harness is designed to feed two seats. A metal separator is provided at each harness connection. A data infeed side cover shall be provided to conceal the entry of data wires. Power/Data option shall be available on all seat sizes. All electrical components shall be installed on site with hardware provided. Power/Data system shall be UL Listed as an accessory for use with Concerto auditorium seating.

1. Power/Data Module
The receptacle and single data port module shall be constructed of a molded polycarbonate body, riveted to a galvanized steel top mounting bracket. The placement shall be at a slight angle toward the seat to allow easy plug in and removal of plugs. A second data port can be specified which will be located directly below the first data port. Data ports shall accommodate AT&T, AMP, Levition, Krone, Thomas & Betts, Panduit and Hubbell connectors. The data jacks shall be provided by the customer. Power/data outlets shall be located on the right-hand side only (when seated).

2. Five-Wire Harness
The five-wire distribution harness shall distribute power between the power/data modules as well as accept an infeed harness. Each harness shall consist of a three-way housing on one end and a single plug on the other end. All harnesses and connections shall be fully enclosed in plastic troughs.

3. Wireway Cover
The harness shall be enclosed in the plastic cover mounted at the bottom of the back shroud. A metal divider shall be provided within the cover at each harness connection. The wireway covers shall be constructed of vacuum-formed polystyrene. The cover shall be attached to the bottom of the back shroud with (2) #8 x 1/2" screws provided. The cover shall measure a minimum of .056" thick meeting U.L. 94HB. The trough shall accommodate 24 Category 5 or Category 7 four-pair twisted wires.

4. Half- and Full-Height Side Covers
Half-height side covers shall be provided for uprights between seats to conceal wires to power/data modules. Side covers shall be constructed of vacuum-formed polystyrene and shall measure a minimum of .056" thick meeting U.L. 94HB. Half-height side covers shall be 16" high leaving 6-1/4" of open space above the bottom mounting (foot) plate, on a level surface. Full-height side covers of same construction shall be provided at power infeed locations and data infeed locations. Side covers shall be attached with (2) or (4) #8 x 3/8" screws as provided. Optional full-height side covers can be specified at aisle ends.

5. Power Infeed
The five-wire power infeed shall consist of three 12-gauge hot wires, one 12-gauge ground wire, one 10-gauge neutral wire encased in liquid-tight conduit which shall be hard-wired to the building power source. The infeed shall enter the full-length side cover on the inside of the upright on the right-hand side of any seat (when seated). Power is fed into the center of the designated side cover approximately 2-1/4" above the floor through a 3/4" - 90° elbow being fed by 1/2" liquid-tight conduit. The wire whip is supplied with 24" of liquid-tight conduit and a 6" lead of wire. It is recommended that the building power source be located within plus or minus two inches from the center line of the designated chair. Flexible conduit shall encase the wires on the inside of the panel and connect to the 90° metal connector. One power infeed will typically power up to twenty-four seats (at an estimated usage of 2 amps per outlet).

6. Retrofit of Power/Data
The power/data system may be retrofitted to Concerto product shipped after March, 1998.

7. Note: Floor mounting anchors are not provided.

INSTALLATION SECTION

FLOOR MOUNTING REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Construction Required for Upright Installation

Wood Floors

  • Minimum two layers of 3/4" thickness tongue & groove
  • APA rated grade plywood
  • Allow minimum embedment 1-1/2" with lag screws
  • Use toggle bolt if less than 1-1/2" embedment

Concrete Floors

  • 3000 psi Concrete compressive strength
  • 3" thick free of obstructions for 1-1/2"
  • 4" thick for riser mount free of obstructions for 2-1/2"
  • Riser to be plumb within 1/8 degree
  • Minimum anchor embedment 1-1/2"

Note: Warranty null and void if KI product is installed on flooring not meeting minimum structural requirements stated above.

Floor Fastener Requirements

Wood Floors

  • 5/16" x 1-3/4" lag bolts; grade 5
  • 5/16" flat washers
  • 3/8" toggle bolts
  • All hardware to be plated
  • Four bolt assemblies required per base

Concrete Floors

  • 5/16"-18 or 3/8"-16 grade 5 expansion anchors
  • Standard flat washers, plated
  • LockTite (red) thread lock or equal
  • Four screw assemblies required per base
