Nu-lok™ was developed as a system in the 1980’s by an Australian roofing contractor. Today, thousands of Nu-lok™ roofs now installed worldwide. In 2003, Vermont’s Greenstone Slate Company recognized the benefits of the Nu-lok installation system and the two companies formed an alliance to introduce a new, much more efficient way create the highly regarded slate roof—without the weight and using far less material. Nu-lok uses genuine Vermont natural slate but uses a simple grid system to fasten the individual tiles.

Nu-lok USA and Greenstone are both headquartered in Poultney, Vermont, where Greenstone’s slate quarries are also located.

Slate’s fine reputation as a roofing material is well known. Using Nu-lok's roofing installation system, with its patented design, the benefits of slate are obtained in a substantially more efficient way — primarily because it eliminates the need for the double-lapping of slates. The benefits are far reaching in overall roof cost reduction, reduced material needs, substantial weight reduction, increased building energy efficiency and a better overall environmental impact than the vast majority of synthetic or man-made roofing solutions. The University of Alaska found a cost effective, sustainable building cladding solution for their new science building.
