Slate Flooring

Slate is an elegant yet economical and resistant interior and exterior flooring material. Echeguren Slate, Inc. imports and stocks an extensive line of slate, sandstone and quartzite from China, Brazil, India, Africa, Europe and the U.S. New slates of striking color and exotic beauty are being introduced into the American market.  The many shapes, textures and colors being offered are enhancing the architectural palette. A slate floor will enliven your project and give it a finished look of unique character.


In addition to tile, pavers, dimensional slabs and flagging, we offer slate for walls, treads and risers, sills and coping.

Questions & Answers

Q: Why select slate as a flooring material?

A: Slate is a natural material that is inexpensive (about the same price as inexpensive ceramic tile), beautiful and flexible to work with.

Q: How is slate a “flexible” material?

A: Slate is available in a range of cut tiles, natural shapes and slabs. Grinding and field shaping are easier than with granite or similar stones.

Q: Is the use of slate in a shower a maintenance problem?

A: Slate in showers should be sealed (Mira Matte and 511 Porous Plus from Miracle Sealants are good choices).  Mira Matte brings out the color and richness of the slate.

Q: Should slate counter tops be sealed?

A: Counter tops should be sealed (511 Porous Plus is a good choice).

Q: Is scratching from chairs a problem?

A: Furniture placed directly on slate floors should have the nylon or similar glides typically available on most chairs.

Q: Does the uneven thickness of ungauged slate tiles present problems?

A: A wet mortar bed is recommended to allow for leveling of corners.
