PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

C-Cure Board is a glass-mesh, concrete backerboard.

BASIC USE

C-Cure Board is designed for use as an interior or exterior substrate for ceramic tile, slate, thin-brick veneers, stucco, E.I.F.S. or other similar surface systems.

ADVANTAGES

  • Remains stable while increasing in strength, even when exposed to continuous moisture.
  • Tapeless installation on floor applications.
  • Excellent overall flexural, compressive and tensile strength characteristics.
  • 20 year limited warranty.
LIMITATIONS
  • C-Cure Board shall not be used as a structural load bearing member.
  • Steel framing shall be 20-gauge or heavier.
  • Maximum framing spacing shall not exceed 16" o.c. for both interior and exterior applications.
  • All framing shall comply with local building codes and requirements and be limited in deflection to L/360 under all intended loads.
  • C-Cure Board is unaffected by water but it is not waterproof. If the area behind the backerboard must be kept dry, a moisture barrier or waterproof membrane must be used.
  • C-Cure Board shall not be used on exterior surfaces where imposed wind loads exceed 30 lbs. per square feet.
  • Do not use drywall tape or uncoated fiberglass tape.
COMPOSITION & MATERIALS

Cementitious Backer Unit (CBU): A nailable, screwable backerboard or underlayment panel which is composed of stable Portland cement, aggregates and reinforcements that has a significant ability to remain unaffected by prolonged exposure to moisture.

ACCESSORIES

Joint reinforcement: 2" wide polymer- coated (alkali resistant) mesh tape shall be used to reinforce joints and corners.

Bonding materials: For leveling beds, joint treatment and to set facing material, use dry-set (thin-set) mortar, or preferably a latex-Portland cement mortar. All mortars shall comply with ANSI A118.1 or A118.4 standards. Type 1 organic adhesives meeting ANSI A136.1 may be used in dry areas for tile setting only of wall tile and floor tile not exceeding 6" x 6".

Fasteners:

  • Galvanized roofing nails, 1 1/2" long with hot dipped galvanized coating for use with wood framing. Nails shall meet Federal Specification #FF-N105B/type 2 style 20.
  • C-Cure Concrete Backerboard Screws or equivalent, 1 1/4" long , for use with wood or 20-gauge steel framing.
Washers: 3/4" diameter, countersunk, stainless steel washers for use where vertical panel edges abut over a framing member.

SIZES

1/2" thickness x 36" width x 60" length.
1/4" thickness x 36" width x 60" length.

APPLICABLE STANDARDS

Exceeds ANSI A118.9 specifications.
NES Report NER #447.

INSTALLATION

INTERIOR APPLICATIONS

General: All framing shall comply with local building code requirements and be designed to provide support with a maximum allowable deflection of L/360 under all intended loads. Framing members shall be spaced a maximum of 16" o.c.

Control joints: Tiled surfaces exceeding 24'-36' in a continuous plane or surfaces abutting a dissimilar structure shall be protected from structural movement with control (expansion) joints. Location, width and details of control joints shall follow sound architectural practices.

Walls & Ceilings

Wall framing: Edges of backerboard parallel to framing shall be continuously supported. Studs above a shower floor shall be either notched or furred to accommodate the thickness of the waterproof membrane or pan. The surround opening for a tub or precast shower receptor shall not be more than 1/4" longer than unit to be installed.

Ceiling framing: The maximum allowable dead load of the completed ceiling assembly (including insulation, backerboard, bonding material and facing material) shall not exceed 10 lbs./sq. ft. Ceiling joists or furring channels shall not exceed 16" o.c. The edges of backerboard parallel to framing shall be continuously supported. Provide additional blocking when necessary to permit proper backerboard attachment.

Backerboard: Install backerboard, leaving a 1/8" to 3/16" gap at all joints and corners. Stagger board joints with those of adjacent rows. Fasten backerboard every 8" o.c. along framing members. Fill gaps solid with latex Portland cement mortar and embed 2" alkali resistant fiberglass tape.

Floors & Counters

Subfloor or base: Minimum 5/8" exterior grade plywood shall be securely glued and fastened to floor joist or on top of counter base. Maintain 1/8" gap between all sheets. Floor joists and counter framing should be spaced a maximum of 16" o.c.

Underlayment: Using a 1/4" square-notched trowel, apply a leveling bed of dry set mortar to the subfloor or base. Immediately laminate C-Cure Board Concrete Backerboard to subfloor base, leaving a 1/8" to 3/16" gap between boards at all joints and corners. Stagger backerboard joints from underlying plywood joints by at least 6". Fasten backerboard every 6" to 8" o.c. throughout board field and around all edges while setting bed mortar is still workable. Around perimeter of each board, locate fasteners within 1/2" to 2" of edge. Fill all joints and corners solid with latex-modified mortar. Taping of floor and counter joints is not required.

EXTERIOR APPLICATIONS

General: All framing shall comply with local building code requirements and be designed to provide support with a maximum allowable deflection of L/360 under all intended live (including wind and rain) and dead loads.

Control joints: Finished surfaces exceeding 12'-16' in a continuous plane or surfaces abutting a dissimilar structure shall be protected from structural movement with control (expansion) joints. Location, width and details of control joints shall follow sound architectural practices.

Decks

Subfloor: Plywood shall be securely glued and fastened to floor joists spaced a maximum of 16" o.c. Subfloor shall be sloped at a minimum pitch of 1/4" per foot. The floor surface shall be true to plane within 1/8" in 10’.

Underlayment: Using a 1/4" square-notched trowel, apply a leveling bed of dry set mortar to the subfloor. Install C-Cure Board to subfloor, leaving a 1/8" to 3/16" gap between boards at all joints and corners. Stagger backerboard joints from underlying plywood joints by at least 6". Fasten backerboard every 6" to 8" o.c. throughout board field and around all edges while setting bed mortar is still workable. Around the perimeter of each board, locate fasteners within 1/2" to 2" of edge. Fill all joints and corners solid with latex-Portland cement mortar. Taping of floor joints is not required.

Waterproof membrane: Apply a waterproof membrane to the entire surface of the C-Cure Board, following membrane manufacturer’s installation instructions in detail.

Walls

Framing: Studs shall be spaced a maximum of 16" o.c. (Edges/ends of backerboard parallel to framing shall be continuously supported. Provide additional blocking when necessary to permit proper backerboard attachment.) Do not install backerboard directly over protrusions from stud plane such as heavy brackets or fasteners heads.

Weather barrier: While C-Cure Board is unaffected by moisture, a moisture barrier must be installed to protect the cavity. It shall be installed according to the manufacturer’s specifications between the C-Cure Board and the framing members.

Backerboard: Precut C-Cure Board panels and make necessary cutouts. Install backerboard leaving a 1/8" to 3/16" gap at all joints and corners. Stagger board joints with those of adjacent rows. Fasten backerboard every 8" o.c. along studs. At all joints and corners, prefill gap with latex-Portland cement mortar, then embed 2" fiber-glass mesh tape and smooth material over joint and corner.

Tile, thin-brick and other facing materials: Installation of tile or similar facing material shall comply with ANSI A108 standard specifications.
