ClassicWood Architectural Wood Columns
Melton Classics presents a complete line of architecturally accurate wood columns, which are consistent with the Classic Orders of Architecture as recorded by Renaissance architect, Vignola, in the late 1500's. The columns are available in round, square, or pilaster configurations. While the ClassicWood™ columns are designed to comply with original classic styles, custom and contemporary columns are also available.
Quality Construction
Column shafts are made from the highest quality clear wood available as required in the specification. Staves are glued with waterproof glue and bound under pressure. They are cured for more than 24 hours. The rough shaft is then turned to correct entasis using a combination of state-of-the-art equipment and manual expertise from our woodworking artisans. Shafts are then treated with preservative, hand finished, primed, and inspected to ensure consistency and quality prior to shipping. Column shafts for exterior applications are coated on the inside with asphaltum to provide waterproofing. ClassicWood™ columns are fully load bearing. They are available in plain or fluted styles.
Quality Materials
Columns intended for exterior applications are available in Clear All Heart Redwood, Western Red Cedar, pin, and many other clear western wood species. Staves are available in solid or finger-jointed construction. Roman Doric and Tuscan bases, capitals, and plinths are offered in load bearing redwood or fiberglass. Cast aluminum plinths are suggested for use with redwood bases.
Columns intended for interior applications are available in pine, poplar, mahogany, maple, cherry, oak, or almost any other wood species. Wood species for capitals, bases and plinths are provided to match the column shafts.
Installation
ClassicWood™ columns can be manufactured in halves and splined for reassembly around structural members. Installation contractor must provide proper ventilation of the column shaft. Melton Classics claims no responsibility for columns that are improperly installed or installed with inadequate ventilation. Immediately after installation, all exterior surfaces should be covered with two coats of high quality Duration acrylic latex paint. Columns must be stored in a dry, well-ventilated location prior to installation.
All interior and exterior surfaces of wood capitals should be covered with at least two coats of high quality Duration acrylic latex paint prior to installation. All capitals intended for exterior use are furnished with appropriate lead flashing. Premium grade caulking is required where the capital meets the beam and where it rests on the column shaft. Each capital is supplied with suitable support to transfer structural load to the column shaft.
The following wood species are available.
