The Garden Roof® transforms roofs and plazas into natural, pedestrian
accessible, landscaped environments. Designed as a lightweight, low-profile
system, the Garden Roof minimizes the structural and environmental loads while
extending the life of the roof and maximizing its natural beauty.
Provides a peaceful atmosphere and peace of mind. Because
the system begins with MM6125® waterproofing, a seamless hot rubberized
asphalt with over 30 years of success, you know the roof is watertight.
Improves energy efficiency. Soil and vegetation act as a natural
insulating layer, cooling the ambient temperature in hot weather and preventing
the cool air from penetrating the interior in colder temperatures.
Increases usable space and adds value. Because the intensive
Garden Roof® is designed for foot traffic, the roof adds an entire floor
of usable space – a feature that even may increase the value of the structure.
Manages storm water. The assembly holds between 50 and 90%
of the water that falls on it. The result is a significant decrease in demand
on the drainage system, storm sewers and treatment plants – and an increase
in LEED™ credits.
The ultimate in cool roofing. Vegetation increases the solar
reflectivity of the roof and reduces the amount of heat stored and released
into the atmosphere – major factors in mitigating the urban heat island
effect. And another way of gaining LEED™ credits.
Proven performance. The Garden Roof® components have been
installed on commercial and residential applications for over 40 years. It’s
technology with real experience.
Integrated elegance. The system can also be used in conjunction
with our Ultimate Assembly® paver system, allowing for an attractive blend
of softscape and hardscape elements.
Creates therapeutic environment. Garden roofs add natural
beauty, and are soothing, calming environments, particularly well suited to
hospitals and health care facilities.
Government subsidies. In some cities the Garden Roof may qualify
for government bonuses, credits or other programs which may decrease your costs.
The primary components of the Garden Roof are MM6125®-EV (25% recycled
content) waterproofing membrane, Hydroflex RB or Root Barriers, Gardendrain drainage/water
retention panels (100% recycled, molded polyethylene) or approved equal, Moisture
Retention Mat and LiteTop® soil. Hydrotech representatives and partners
can assist owners, architects and landscape architects in the selection of appropriate
soil mixture, depth and vegetation.
The Garden Roof is available in two assemblies. The extensive Garden Roof®
is a low or no maintenance system with a soil depth between 3 and 6 inches that
is well suited to grasses and sedums. The intensive Garden Roof can accommodate
a wider variety of vegetation, including shrubs and trees, with a deeper soil
column (from 6 inches to several feet). Intensive systems require regular maintenance
– watering, fertilizing and mowing – and can be used as recreational
space.
