Vertical Exterior Expansion Joint SystemsExterior expansion joint systems are a unique product in the expansion joint product world. They must be able to handle the movement criteria of the building and also maintain a weather tight seal. Two products I will describe today are wonderful products that work very well. The first product is a standard compression seal with adhesive. The second exterior system is a three part system that is engineered for multidirectional movement. The compression seal has been around for many years and performs well when used in joint openings with limited movements. It is easily installed with adhesive versus mechanical fasteners. The better compression seals have an internal truss system which keeps uniformed pressure against the wall surface to keep out the weather. This, along with the recommended adhesive should keep the weather at bay and perform in its intended specifications for many years of worry free use. The three part exterior expansion joint system consists of sealant, aluminum extrusion and elastomeric glands. This design allows it to have multi-directional movement because the aluminum extrusions are mounted to both sides of the joint opening and allowed to move independently from each other even while both are attached to the elastomeric gland. The elastomeric gland also has the option to either blend in with the building or accent the building with many color choices available to choose from now.
