Since its beginnings in Detroit as a small windshield fabricator in 1932, Guardian has a history of progressive management, innovative thinking and steady growth. As Guardian Glass Company, Guardian produced millions of square feet of laminated glass for windshields in trucks, jeeps and other military vehicles during World War II. In the early 1950s, when the American automobile industry introduced the curved windshield, Guardian moved quickly, purchasing a plant in Detroit, and began full production of curved, laminated windshields.
Guardian became the first company to enter the U.S. primary glass industry in nearly 50 years when production started in 1970 at a newly constructed plant in Carleton, Mich. Guardian continued to build facilities throughout the United States and in 1981, moved into the global economy with the construction of a new plant in Luxembourg. In the 1990s, Guardian moved into Asia, and now operates plants on five continents.
Guardian Fiberglass opened its first fiberglass line in Albion, Mich., in 1980. It continues to grow, with a seventh plant scheduled to begin production later this year. Through acquisitions, GBP has increased its business efficiency and distribution capabilities and has become a leading North American distributor of building materials for residential and commercial construction.
Guardian expanded its research and development capabilities by opening an industry-leading Science & Technology Center (STC) in Carleton, Mich., in June 2000. Today, Guardian is at the forefront of research and development, breaking new ground through rapid innovation and invention.
